It is very easy to feel lonely and in despair when you see your significant other distancing themselves more and more from you everyday, acting with such indifference that it makes you wonder if they may be planning to leave you. You hope the problem will go away by ignoring it, but their indifference still persists. Is there anything you could do to stop an imminent breakup? More importantly, what can you do if you are the only one trying to avoid it?
First you should try to stay calm and think clearly about the situation. You have both been having problems for some time if the situation has gotten to this point, but maybe there is a way to salvage the pieces and start over. You can start by making a list of all the problems in the relationship that you can identify, as well as possible solutions that both of you could undertake. Then go over these with your partner while having a calm, rational conversation. Let them know that you are willing to work through the problems together.
By bringing this to their attention, you may be able to start reopening the lines of communication. Make sure to listen to their side of the situation, but don’t get defensive. The last thing you want to do when trying to figure out how to stop your breakup is start another fight that could possibly be the final nail in the coffin. During this conversation, be sure to remind them of all the qualities that made you fall in love with them in the first place, and how important they are to you. By focusing on the positives you will both become less defensive and be more open to feedback.
You can also show them they are worth your extra effort. Start wearing that favorite outfit they loved on you, or that cologne or perfume that you wore when you started dating. This will remind them of the wonderful memories you both shared during the beginning of your relationship. Looking your best may stimulate an interest in you again which would help remind them of the reasons they were with you in the first place. It would also help to bring them to some of the places where you had your fondest memories, like a favorite restaurant or that theme park you went to during one of your first dates.
Once you have their attention, they might be more willing to start putting some extra effort into the relationship as well. Before this point, they might had already thrown in the towel and were simply waiting for the right time to leave you. Giving them this extra reminder of the wonderful time you had together could make them reconsider their decision and win them back to your side. Let them know that they are loved and cared about, and you will accomplish the most important step to start the process of rekindling your relationship.
